This is the last thing plane passengers want to see out the window.

The picture of the smashed up engine was taken after a loud explosion on a plane in the US forced it to divert.

Photos from the aircraft reveal the engine inlet was completely torn away, which caused cabin pressure to plummet.

Amazingly, none of the 99 passengers or five crew members on the Southwest Airlines flight from New Orleans to Orlando, Florida, were injured.

The plane landed in Pensacola, Florida, at 9.40am yesterday.

A passenger told the Wall Street Journal: ‘There was the loud explosion but after that it was very controlled. Scary, but in control.’

People onboard cheered the pilot when the aircraft made a safe landing.

It also emerged that the plane’s fuselage, front edge of the wing, horizontal tail stabilizer and winglet were also damaged.

An investigation is now underway to see what happened.
